New Blog aka relocation

I’ve decided to move my blog to tumblr for a variety of reasons.  You can now read my blog at

I’m a Total Geek

Okay so I don’t have any new art at the moment.  I have a few things in the works, I promise.  That said I’m going to take a moment to advertise the geek that I am.  This was a great week for mail, because many wonderful packages arrived for me.  A) I received my Star Trek Science Engineer uniform shirt.  I’m still waiting on my vulcan ears, but I’m almost all set with my costume.  B) I got a copy of Cover Run: The DC Comic Art of Adam Hughes. I love AH’s work, even if the ratio of scantily clad men is extremely low in comparison to the ladies.  It’s a great book and I was lucky enough to get one.  The first printing sold out within a week and I was worried I would never get a copy, however low and behold the day I get an amazon gift card they’re in stock.

I also just ordered a Yuki7 t-shirt from fleet street scandal.  Kevin Dart is pretty amazing and I’m so glad I finally set aside my crazy frugal ways and purchased it. Now I’ll go back to hoarding my money and living off ramen.

Curiouser & Curiouser: An Alice Inspired Art Competition

A while back I hinted at an art program I was organizing for my library. Well it’s finally underway.  Take a look. My Lil Alice piece is being used as the logo, however it’s been slightly altered (good bye hearts!) to match the library’s colors.

I’m Not Dead Just Slowly Melting

It’s been hot and humid for the past week.  I live in an upstairs apartment with no AC, my cat and I are slowly melting away into puddles of sweat.  It’s pretty horrid.  In between apartment hunting, work, and devising dinner plans that involve me not using the stove I’ve had little time to whip up any wonderful artistic creations.   I did enter a piece into Festival of the Arts, but it was promptly rejected (booo!), but oh well.  I do however have the promised photos of my Thesis show.

B.F.A. Acquired

In the insanity of graduation week I’ve been neglecting this blog.  I figure its pretty understandable considering A) I had to hang my show B) Attend opening for said show C) had my BFA review, and D)  graduation ceremony.  Graduation is sort of a time suck.  E) I also have no internet at home and with everything going on I haven’t had much of a chance to go somewhere to get online.  I suppose I should recap the events of the past week, or my show and review at the very least.

My show was this last week  Tuesday (4-7) at the Old Federal Building in downtown Grand Rapids.  Not to brag but… oh who am I kidding I love to brag.  Alright that was a lie, but good for you if I caught where that is quoted from.  Seriously though the show ended up looking amazing.  Kendall’s graduating class this year is a pretty amazing bunch of students (myself and my roommate included). People were pouring in and few of us had the chance to take a break from everyone.  I had a couple people stop to talk, asking me about my work, and my business cards were over half gone when I went for my review the next day.

Speaking of my BFA review it went swimmingly.  I reviewed with Drawing Professors Patti Constantine and Gypsy Schindler and got really positive feedback.  Patti related to me that a group of students came in with their high school prior to my review and were very engaged with my work.  Apparently they were actually reading my artist statement (which almost never happens) and were debating which fairy tale was which, writing down the author names mentioned, and really wanted to go and read the fairy tales for themselves.  In between this and all the people who ran from the room (the blood was a little too much for some people) I achieved the reaction I was aiming for with my work.  I guess that’s a win for me.  If you live in the Grand Rapids area and didn’t get to see the show I’ll be entering one of my thesis pieces in Festival for the Arts and hopefully it’ll get it in (if it does I’ll post an announcement).

As for the ceremony…well it’s a Graduation ceremony, they’re pretty standard.  The big difference with graduating from art school is that you get multi-color ( the Primary colors) for your tassel and honors cords.  Also when we walked across stage a piece of our work was projected onto a large screen behind us.   My roommate has tons of pictures from the show and graduation so I’ll post some as soon as I get some from her, however here’s one from after the ceremony.

Done! Well Almost…

I awoke bright and early this morning in order to be at the Old Federal Building by 10 am in order to hang my show.  My six pieces are now framed and hung up for the show.   I was hanging my pieces from about 10 am until 3:00- with a short lunch break in between.  My labels and artist statement are supposed to be ready tomorrow so I’ll be back there at 10 again to put those up and give my glass a quick cleaning.  I will most likely help my roommate hang up her fifty million photographs too! (okay so its not fifty million, but there are quite a few of them).

Any way only a few days left before the big opening (the show’s opening reception is May 4th at 4 pm).  The show will be up until May 8th and then we have to do take down on the 10th.  It’s a crazy, busy life. Soon I’ll have time again to do more than sketches. *fingers crossed*

Pretty Things to Make Me Happy

There is nothing quite like coming into work and having someone be a total jerk to you within the first hour of your shift.  It just kind of ruins  the whole work day for me.  In an attempt to salvage myself from my newly soured mood, I started looking at pretty things that I wish to own.   Like the following…

Tweak Boutique’s Hoot collection are just bloody adorable.  I want a a couple of pairs for myself.  Unfortunately, my ears didn’t take well to being pierced, so I can only wear clip-ons (boo!).  I emailed tweak and they said they would order the right supplies to make clip-on versions and would email me when they could be available.  Hopefully one day they’ll be mine!

To your left you’ll see the gorgeous dress I just ordered from Urban Outfitters.  Usually I find nothing at Urban Outfitters because its all just too ‘Hip’ for me.  This pretty kimchi Blue Printed Navajo dress is the exception.  I’m crossing my fingers that A) it’ll fit B) Look good on me , and finally C) show up in time for me to wear to my Thesis show opening next week!

You know what also makes me happy?  The fact that after tomorrow I don’t have to work for an entire week.  What’s more I’ll be getting paid to not be there- woo hoo vacation time!  I’ll be hanging my show this Wednesday, but after that I can putz around to my hearts content.   Most likely I’ll do a few doodles like the ones below.
